Unit 1-chosen topic:
|
The topic I chose for my final piece was Disguise. I picked disguise because I thought there was a big variety of ways to disguise a specific object or picture. I also picked it because I was immediately interested in experimenting with pictures around the specific theme. For example my initial idea was to experiment with the human face.
On this page I will be researching artists who's pictures are based around disguise and have given me ideas towards a final piece or images that build up to it. My initial plan:

inge morath collaboration with saul steinberg
Inge Morath met the artist Saul Steinberg in 1958. They met because Morath went to his home to make a portrait, but when Steinberg came to the door he was wearing a mask he had made from a paper bag. Over a period of several years, they collaborated on a series of portraits getting strangers, who were willing to wear one of Steinbergs masks and then pose in everyday situations. Steinbergs amusing masks, combined with Moraths photography create amazing and humorous images.
my first set of images
In all of the pictures I took you couldn't see a whole face. Some are being covered by plants, I got this idea from Inge Morath and Saul Steinberg by hiding the face but instead of the whole face not being seen I decided to have patches of it shown. I took all of these pictures on an Ipod. I used an app to get the different effects for example the picture with Olivia with two different facial expressions. what went well in these set of photos was that I took the type of photos that I wanted to, which included hiding the face. I think I had some good variations of hiding the facial features. However to improve I think I should take more photos on a camera for a clearer picture and think of more unusual ways to disguise something, other than a face.
photoshop
To put the animal head on the human body I had to use photoshop. First i had to put the animal picture on top of the other picture, change the opacity, then rub out the outline of the face shape of the animal. I then had to change the colour tones of the animal face to match the human colour skin, so it looked more realistic.

These are the final images from photoshop
my favourite
I picked this photo because I think the specific animal works really well with the human body, because the head shape of the Panda was roughly the same as a humans head size. I also think this picture was the best because it took longer than the other two, because I decided the picture would look better with the Panda ears in the image . Further more because I included the ears, it made this picture more developed than the others, because I wasn't just thinking about the facial feature but others as well. I think this is the best picture I have ever made and I am really proud of it.

Lorenzo Vitturi
|
This video shows the first major UK solo exhibition of the Italian artist Lorenzo Vitturi's acclaimed body of work Dalston Anatomy. Vitturi began creating sculptures in his studio from a market, organic composition, he used a variety of fruit, vegetables and fabrics. When he creates the still life images with the objects he also finds a way to try and disguise them and the process of making them.

a trip to The photographers gallery
Lorenzo Vitturi's work has given me some inspiration, by the different ways he disguises things such as food and different objects. He disguises them, by using different objects and putting them into different shapes, and creating a sculpture from them.
Second set of images
To create these images, I took a picture of Olivia and then i printed out 7 copies of it. Two of those copies I cut up using the strimmer, where as the other 5 i used the shredder to cut it up. With the pictures i shredded i decided to get all the strips of he picture and put it into a big pile. I did this to disguise The face, but people would know it used to be a face i would specifically take pictures where parts of facial features were shown in the clump of photographs, for example and eye. With the strimmed pictures i decided to put the picture back together but then i would take out a few pieces of the photograph to make it a bit distorted, like taking out the nose. However I also lengthened the picture by adding more parts to the photograph from other strimmed pictures. For example I added more parts to the eye and lips. Overall I think it was a good test to see how the pictures would come out, but I don't think I would like to develop these pictures more to create a final piece, because although i liked the idea.
My evaluation
The theme I chose to base my final pieces on was disguise. I picked disguise because I thought there could be a big variety of ways to disguise certain objects. Another reason why I picked it, was because as soon as I heard it was an option, I immediately thought of the idea of disguising someone's face somehow. To get inspiration I decided to look up the photographers recommended on the task sheet for disguise, two of the photographers mentioned were Inge Morath and Saul Steinberg who did a collaboration together.
The way these two photographers included disguise into their pictures, was by taking pictures of people but covering their faces, with a paper bag and drawing on different facial expressions. This was really helpful for me, because my initial plan was to disguise a human face. From the pictures they had produced it opened my mind into thinking more outside the box. I think my best Idea so far was merging a human and a animal together to create a human body with an animal face. I think this was the best, because I spent the most time creating the 3 final outcomes and I think they were really successful.
